Good African Refurbishes Farmer Village Banks and Launches in Tesco (UK)
The coffee harvest season is now here, and we have been busy preparing our coffee farmers for the buying season. During the last off-season months, our field team has been working in Kasese to refurbish and train the leaders of the 15 farmers village banks (savings, credit and cooperative organizations – SACCOs). These banks are located in 17 different sub-counties where the coffee is grown, to assist the farmers access credit to improve the infrastructure and operations as part of the 50% profit share initiatives.
Farmer Group Leaders Undergoing Financial Training Farmer Group Leaders Undergoing Management Training
To quote the field staff leader, Edirisa Sendagire:

“The impact that we are making on these individual farmers livelihoods is significant, since not only are they able to sell their coffee at competitive prices, but they have been empowered through leadership trainings to take charge of their lives, educate their children and supplement their coffee income.

The leaders of the farmer groups have also been trained on how to deal with group dynamics and financial management issues which improves chances that the groups will not fail”

On the International market front, we launched our coffee in over 370 Sainsubury’s supermarkets in the United Kingdom on April 5 and are now also in over 400 Tesco (UK) supermarkets from July 5, 2010.
